Pastor - John Murphy
The Rev. John A. Murphy, Jr. (a.k.a. “Murph”) grew up in West Seattle with a love of the outdoors, aquatics, and people. He would tell you that it was VBS and then scouting that brought him in literally through the church’s back door. It was in scouts while earning his God and Country Award that he “learned a lot about God, but still didn’t know God.” His “ears were first opened to the Gospel” in Young Life and his Christian journey began early in High School. Just weeks later he would deliver his first sermon on bus of Scouts in Washington, D.C. on their way to the National Jamboree.
While completing his degree at the University of Washington (‘87), John felt God’s call on his life and following graduation did a year long internship to explore ministry, during which he recognized his need for more biblical knowledge and enrolled in Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. With a passion to be a complete minister to young people and their families, he earned his Master of Divinity degree with an emphasis in Youth Ministry (’92).
Since then, he has pastored churches in Chattanooga, TN; Federal Way, WA; and Parma, ID. He has been a Trainer of Trainers with the National Institute of Youth Ministry and Youth Builders, and served as a ministry consultant for pastors and churches. John has been a sought after speaker for camps and conferences throughout the United States, and over the years has had the opportunity to share the Gospel with thousands.
Currently, John splits his time between his pastor position here at Mission Woods Church and the Auburn Valley YMCA where he oversees the swim lesson program, instructor training and staff development. He continues to serve in Young Life as a Wyldlife leader for In between his pastoral calls have been stints in Young Life ministry and aquatics at YMCA’s. Thunder Mountain Middle School in Enumclaw.
